About

Our approach brings together African psychology, traditional healing practices, and holistic wellbeing methods that honour the connection between mind, body, spirit, and community.

Our approach to holistic wellbeing
Whole Person Care

Culturally grounded healing that seeks balance across identity, health, psychology, and spirit.

Our Approach

At Khemenu-Rekh Institute, we integrate African psychology, traditional healing practices, and holistic wellbeing techniques to promote comprehensive health through culturally relevant methods.

The work also incorporates Qi Gong and Yoga for energy cultivation and physical wellbeing, alongside African psychology as a way to decolonize psychological theory and practice and restore a fuller sense of identity, dignity, and healing.

African psychology

African Psychology

African psychology is the application of psychological theories and practices grounded in African culture, history, and worldview. Psychological care should be centered within African experience rather than relying solely on Eurocentric models.

Cultural reclamation is essential to healing and empowerment. By understanding and embracing traditional African values, beliefs, and practices, people of African descent can strengthen psychological wellbeing and resilience.

We explore the psychological impact of colonialism, slavery, and systemic racism on African-descended populations. We highlight how historical traumas and ongoing social injustices contribute to internalised racism, self-hatred, and cultural alienation, and we see this work as part of a broader process of psychological restoration and liberation.

Cultural reclamation

Cultural Reclamation

We advocate for the reclamation and celebration of African cultural heritage as a crucial part of psychological healing, empowerment, resilience, and a more grounded sense of self.

We also support Afrocentric education that prioritizes the experiences, perspectives, and contributions of people of African descent. This includes educational approaches that incorporate African history, literature, and philosophy in order to build confidence, consciousness, and positive identity.

The broader aim is social as well as personal: to strengthen collective identity, resist internalised oppression, and cultivate self-awareness, self-love, and solidarity within the community.

Somatic therapy and holistic healing

Somatic Therapy And Holistic Healing

We advocate a mind-body approach to psychotherapy based on the understanding that the body can hold past trauma and stress, which may appear as physical symptoms, tension, and chronic pain.

Within this framework, therapy seeks to address and release those physical manifestations in support of stronger mental and emotional health. This reinforces the idea that psychological and physical health are interrelated and must be treated together rather than in isolation.

We place this work alongside broader holistic traditions, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, where health is understood as balance and harmony between body, mind, spirit, and environment.
